LOS ANGELES – Virginia women’s tennis first-year Julia Elbaba (Oyster Bay, N.Y.) continued her strong play at the ITA All-American championships on Friday, winning a pair of matches at the Riviera Country Club to become the first Cavalier to reach the semifinals of a national tournament.

Elbaba became the first Virginia player to reach the quarterfinals of the ITA All-American Championships as she downed fellow-freshman Danielle Collins of Florida, 1-6, 6-4, 6-4. Later in the day, she downed Petra Niedermayerova of Kansas State 6-2, 6-2 to reach the semifinals.

Elbaba will meet No. 4 seed Zoe Scandalis of USC in Saturday’s semifinals. The two met this summer in the quarterfinals of a USTA Futures Event in New Orleans. Elbaba won that match 7-5, 6-4 en route to winning that tournament.
