Wake Forest Rallies to Top Virginia 2-1

CHARLOTTESVILLE – No. 12 Wake Forest scored twice in a three-minute span of the second half to rally for a 2-1 come-from-behind win over No. 6 Virginia Friday night in front of 1,617 fans at Klöckner Stadium. The Cavaliers (10-3-1, 3-2-1 ACC) suffered their second conference loss when leading at the half this year, while the Demon Deacons (10-3-1, 4-2-0) recorded their second ACC road win.
“I thought we played well and at times that was some of our best soccer of the season,” said head coach Steve Swanson. “But we are finding ways to lose games instead of finding ways to win games. We were up 1-0 and dominating the game early in the second half. But we couldn’t get that second goal to put them away. When you play good teams, and you let them hang around, this can happen. It happened at Maryland and it happened tonight. There are a lot of positives we can take from this game, but it is disappointing to let this one slip away.”
Virginia controlled the chances in the first half and scored the only goal of the opening 45 minutes. A Cavalier corner kick in the 32nd minute was taken by Kaili Torres (Fleming Island, Fla.), who sent the ball toward the back post. The ball came to Olivia Brannon (Troy, Mich.), who one-timed in her second goal of the season.
The Cavaliers continued to control the game early in the second half, but several quality scoring chances were ruled to be offsides. The Demon Deacons drew even in the 70th minute off of a set piece. Marisa Park sent a free kick from the flank into the box that was headed in by Jackie Logue. Wake Forest took the lead just over three minutes later after Jenai Davidson was deemed to have been tripped in the box. Kristen Meier converted the ensuing penalty kick, which proved to be the game-winner. Virginia pressured the Demon Deacon defense over the final 15 minutes, but could not find an equalizer.
Virginia outshot Wake Forest 13-8 and had a 7-1 corner-kick advantage. Danielle DeLisle (Baltimore, Md.) made two saves in goal for Virginia, while Aubrey Bledsoe made three saves at the other end for Duke.
The Cavaliers begin a three-game road trip on Thursday as they visit Miami. Game time in Coral Gables is 7 p.m.
