CHARLOTTESVILLE – The No. 10 Virginia women’s soccer team begins postseason play on Sunday with an ACC Tournament quarterfinal match at No. 8 North Carolina. Game time at Fetzer Field in Chapel Hill is 1 p.m.
Virginia and North Carolina were both among a four-way tie for second place in the ACC regular season standings with a 6-3-1 record. The tiebreaking procedure gave Maryland the No. 2 seed, Wake Forest the No. 3 seed, North Carolina the No. 4 seed and Virginia the No. 5 seed, setting up the Cavalier-Tar Heel quarterfinal matchup.
The Cavaliers are 13-4-1 overall this season after a 5-1 win over No. 22 Boston College on Thursday in their regular season finale at Klöckner Stadium. Five different players scored as Virginia erased a halftime deficit with five second-half goals. It was the Cavaliers’ second-straight victory over a ranked opponent, a feat they had not accomplished in consecutive games since the 2007 season.
North Carolina is 10-4-2 on the year after a 4-1 win at NC State on Thursday. The Tar Heels trailed for most of the game but used four late goals to not only down the Wolfpack, but stay ahead of the Cavaliers on goal-differential in order to host Sunday’s quarterfinal.
The Tar Heels lead the all-time series 35-1-3, including a 16-1-0 record in Chapel Hill and a 5-0-2 record in the ACC Tournament. The teams played to a 2-2 draw in the regular season meeting on Sept. 16 in Charlottesville. Caroline Miller(Rockville, Md.) scored both goals for Virginia, while Kealia Ohai had both North Carolina goals. In the last meeting at Fetzer Field, the Cavaliers downed the Tar Heels 1-0 in overtime in 2011 for their first win in the series. The last time the teams met in the ACC Tournament was in the 2007 semifinals at the Disney Wide World of Sports in Lake Buena Vista, Fla., a 1-1 draw with North Carolina advancing to the final on penalty kicks.
The other quarterfinal matches on Sunday are No. 8 seed Boston College at regular-season champion Florida State, No. 7 seed Miami at Maryland and No. 6 seed Duke at Wake Forest. The four quarterfinal winners will advance to the semifinals on Nov. 2 at the WakeMed Soccer Park in Cary, N.C. The Virginia-North Carolina winner would play the Florida State-Boston College winner in the first semifinal at 5 p.m. The championship game is Nov. 4 in Cary at 1 p.m.
