Cavaliers Meet Florida State in ACC Semifinals on Friday

CARY, N.C. – The No. 8 Virginia women’s soccer team travels to Cary, N.C., this week for the 2012 ACC Tournament, held at WakeMed Soccer Park. The Cavaliers take on No. 2 Florida State in the semifinals on Friday at 5 p.m., in a game broadcast online by ESPN3. It marks the second consecutive year the teams have met in the ACC semifinals.
All four of the ACC semifinalists are currently ranked in the top eight of the Soccer America rankings, with No. 6 Wake Forest facing No. 7 Maryland in the second semifinal at 7:30 p.m. The winners will meet in Sunday’s final, which is slated for 1 p.m. and will be televised by ESPNU.
The Cavaliers enter the semifinals with a 14-4-1 overall record. Seeded fifth in the tournament, Virginia posted a 1-0 win at fourth-seeded North Carolina on Sunday to advance to Cary. Caroline Miller (Rockville, Md.) scored the game’s lone goal in the 11th minute and became the first opposing player to score two career game-winning goal’s at UNC’s Fetzer Field. The Cavaliers enter Friday’s game on a three-game winning streak, outscoring their three ranked foes 11-1 in those games.
Regular season champion Florida State is 16-2 on the season after a 4-0 win over Boston College on Sunday in the quarterfinals. The Seminoles are the defending ACC Tournament champions after winning their first title last season.
Virginia leads the all-time series, 16-3-4, and the teams have split the two previous meetings in Cary. After the Cavaliers dominated the first 20 games of the series (16-0-4), the Seminoles have won the last three meetings, beginning with last season’s 2-1 ACC semifinal win at WakeMed Soccer Park. Florida State downed Virginia 3-0 in last year’s NCAA Quarterfinal in Tallahassee and won this year’s regular season meeting 1-0 in overtime at the Seminole Soccer Complex.
The winner of the tournament will receive the ACC’s automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament. The field of 64 will be announced on Monday and first round action will begin on Friday, Nov. 9.
