FLUSHING MEADOWS, N.Y. – The Virginia women’s tennis team opened play Thursday at the ITA Intercollegiate Indoor Championships, the final major tournament of the fall, at the Billie Jean King National Tennis Center. The Cavaliers had two doubles teams in action with the duo of Li Xi (Kunming, China) and Stephanie Nauta (Galveston, Texas) advancing to the quarterfinals.

Xi and Nauta had a first round bye before upsetting No. 4 seed Melissa Kopinski and Rachael White of Illinois 8-4 in the second round. They will play Isaura Enrique and Samantha Vickers of Tulsa in the quarterfinals on Friday.

The team of Maci Epstein (Winter Park, Fla.) and Erin Vierra (Norwell, Mass.) posted a 9-8(4) first round win over Robin Anderson and Pamela Montez of UCLA, but lost 8-6 in the second round to the Alabama pair of Alexa Guarachi and MaryAnne Macfarlane.

The tournament will run through Sunday at the home of the U.S. Open.
