CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – Virginia (1-1) hosts Delaware (1-1) in the quarterfinals of the NIT Season Tip-Off tonight at John Paul Jones Arena at 7 p.m. The winner of tonight’s nonconference game plays either Kansas State or Alabama-Huntsville in the semifinals at Madison Square Garden in New York on Wednesday, Nov. 21.

The Cavaliers rebounded from their season-opening loss at George Mason with a 54-45 win over Fairfield last night at JPJ. Junior guard Joe Harris (Chelan, Wash.) led three players in double figures with 15 points. Junior forward Akil Mitchell (Charlotte, N.C.) added a career-best 12 points and freshman forward Evan Nolte(Milton, Ga.) reached double digits for the first time with 11 points.

Virginia trailed 30-28 at the half, but held Fairfield to just 15 points in the second half en route to its 16th consecutive home-opening win. The Cavaliers also held the Stags to 21 percent shooting in the second half. UVa received solid contributions from Paul Jesperson (Merrill, Wis.), Mike Tobey (Monroe, N.Y.) and Justin Anderson(Montross, Va.). Jesperson and Tobey had six points each, while Anderson added five rebounds and four assists.

Harris leads Virginia in scoring at 17 points per game, while Mitchell is second at 11.5 ppg. Harris and Mitchell share the rebounding lead at 7.5 rpg each. Virginia is averaging 56.5 points per game, while limiting opponents to 54 ppg.

With a win tonight, the Cavaliers would make their 13th appearance at Madison Square Garden. Virginia is 5-7 all-time at MSG, including a 3-1 mark it last four contests. The Cavaliers captured the 1980 and 1992 NIT titles at the World’s Most Famous Arena.

Virginia hosts Seattle in nonconference action on Nov. 17. Tipoff is set for 4 p.m.
