CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – The Virginia women’s basketball team (2-0) hosts Providence (1-1) on Sunday, Nov. 18 at 2 p.m. in John Paul Jones Arena.
The Friars are making their first trip to Charlottesville. Virginia holds a 2-0 advantage in the all-time series, with the Cavaliers winning last year, 55-38, in Providence. Virginia also defeated the Friars, 77-70, in the first round of the NCAA Tournament in 1990.
The 38 points allowed in last year’s contest in Rhode Island was one of five games last season in which the Cavaliers held opponents to less than 40 points. Virginia led the ACC last season in scoring defense, allowing 54.1 points-per-game.
Providence improved to 1-1 on the season with a 92-76 victory over Vermont on Nov. 14. It marked the first time that the Friars broke the 90-point mark since February 10, 2007 against St, Johns. Four Friars finished with double digits in the scoring column, including senior guard Symone Roberts (New Britain, Conn.) and senior forward Brianna Edwards (Minneapolis, Minn.), who recorded double-doubles in the victory.
The Cavaliers are coming off a 68-65 comeback victory at Penn. Virginia trailed by 15 points early in the second half, the largest deficit the team had overcome since it came back from down 16 points in the 74-63 victory over Longwood in 2010-11. Last season, Virginia twice came back from double-digit deficits to win, trailing Wake Forest by 13 and James Madison by 12.
Kelsey Wolfe (Jr., Germantown, Md.) scored a career-high 22 points in the Penn game, 10 points higher than her previous best mark of 12. Wolfe was a perfect 9-for-9 from the free throw line, the best performance from the charity stripe since Ataira Franklin (Jr. Bowie, Md.) went 9-for-9 last season against North Carolina (1/5/12).
Wolfe, who scored 10 points in the opener against James Madison, has scored in double digits in back-to-back games only one other time in her career, putting up back-to-back 12-point performances in her first two collegiate games against Hofstra and Mount Saint Mary’s in 2010.
Telia McCall (Sr., Marietta, Ga.) tied her career high, scoring 14 points at Penn. It was the third time in McCalls’ career she scored 14, including last year in the WNIT game against Appalachian State. McCall also had a career-high three assists in the game and matched her career-best with four steals.
The Cavaliers currently have three players averaging in double figures. Franklin leads the team with a 16.5 average after scoring in double digits each of her first two games. Franklin also leads the team with seven steals. Wolfe is second on the team in scoring with a 16.0 average. She leads the team in assists (9) and is tied for second in steals (6). Sarah Imovbioh (So., Abuja, Nigeria) is averaging 13.5 points per game.
Sunday’s game is the last home game for the Cavaliers in the month of November. The team leaves on Monday night to travel to Puerto Rico to play in the San Juan Shootout over Thanksgiving weekend. The team then heads to Minnesota for a Big Ten/ACC Challenge game against the Golden Gophers on Thursday, Nov. 29 in Minneapolis. The team returns home on Sunday, Dec. 2, hosting West Virginia.
