CHARLOTTESVILLE – The Virginia men’s tennis team opens the 2013 season at No. 1 in the Intercollegiate Tennis Association rankings. It is the fourth time in the last eight seasons that the Cavaliers have been the preseason No. 1 team in the poll and it marks the sixth time in the past eight years that Virginia has been nation’s top-ranked team at some point in the season.

Virginia is followed in the poll by reigning NCAA Champion USC, UCLA, Ohio State and ACC rival Duke. Georgia, Pepperdine, Oklahoma, Kentucky and Stanford round out the top 10.

The Cavaliers have five players ranked in the ITA singles rankings, including three of the top seven in the first computer rankings of the season. Junior Alex Domijan (Wesley Chapel, Fla.), the ITA All-American Championships singles champion, is T-No. 2, senior Jarmere Jenkins (College Park, Ga.), the ITA Intercollegiate Indoor Championships singles champion, is No. 4 and first-year Mac Styslinger (Birmingham, Ala.) is No. 7. First-year Ryan Shane (Falls Church, Va.) and Harrison Richmond (Pawleys Island, S.C.) received their first career rankings at No. 22 and No. 55, respectively.

In doubles, Virginia opens the spring with three of the nation’s top nine teams. The duo of Jenkins and Styslinger is No. 4, the team of Richmond and Domijan is No. 8, and the pairing of junior Justin Shane (Falls Church, Va.) and Julen Uriguen (Guatemala City, Guatemala) is No. 9.

The Cavaliers open the dual match season by hosting the ITA Kickoff Weekend on Jan. 25-26 at the Boyd Tinsley Courts at the Boar’s Head Sports Club. The event serves as the qualification tournament for February’s ITA National Team Indoor Championships in Seattle. Virginia will host No. 64 North Florida, No. 56 Arkansas and No. 63 Georgia State during the opening weekend.
