No. 19 Virginia Takes Runner-Up Honors at Virginia Duals

HAMPTON, Va. – The 19th-ranked Virginia wrestling team finished as the runner-up at the 2013 Virginia Duals Tournament Saturday evening after dropping a 21-9 dual to No. 10 Virginia Tech. The No. 4 seed in the 16-team dual-meet tournament, Virginia (9-3) earned its best finish in its 19 trips to the event. UVa upset top-seeded and ninth-ranked Central Michigan in the semifinals Saturday afternoon to advance to the finals.
No. 13 George DiCamillo (Fr., Highland Heights, Ohio), No. 15 Jon Fausey (R-Jr., Dalmatia, Pa.) and Zach Nye (R-Fr., Enola, Pa.) each scored wins for the Cavaliers. The match was tight at each weight class, with all 10 bouts coming by decision and by five points or fewer at each weight.
“I’m proud of my kids and their fight,” Virginia head coach Steve Garland said. “Obviously I’m frustrated to lose, but you have to give Virginia Tech credit too. The first time we wrestled them this season, we didn’t have the heart and fight, but that was not the case this time. We were right in there throughout the match.”
No. 7 Matt Snyder (R-Sr., Lewistown, Pa.) dropped a tight 6-3 bout with No. 4 Jarrod Garnett at 125. Snyder took advantage of Garnett’s first shot to score the first offensive points, as he turned him and picked up two points with a the takedown. Garnett reversed him soon after to knot the score. Snyder took the top position in the second period, and Garnett reversed him with at 23 seconds left to take a 4-3 lead. There were several good scrambles in the third period, but no scoring until Garnett took Snyder down off his own shot with five seconds left.
DiCamillo knotted the team score with a 3-2 decision over Erik Spjut at 133 pounds. After DiCamillo escaped early in the second period, Spjut scored a takedown with 1:15 remaining. DiCamillo scored an escape point to tie it, and he then rode Spjut for the entire third period to lock up the riding time point and the victory.
Virginia Tech (9-2) went on to win four straight bouts. Jimmy Nehls (R-Fr., Downers Grove, Ill.) suffered his first loss of the weekend in the Virginia Duals with a 6-1 loss to No. 13 Zach Neibert. Nehls gave up a takedown with 11 seconds left in first and never led in the bout. Neibert escaped 25 seconds into the third and then took Nehls down again with 30 seconds remaining. He built up 2:06 in riding time to earn the riding time point.
No. 16 Derek Valenti (R-Sr., Newton, N.J.) dropped a heartbreaker in a tiebreaker with No. 6 Nick Brascetta, giving up a reversal with three seconds left in the tiebreaker to fall 3-2. With the match tied at 1, Valenti escaped after 18 seconds in the first tiebreaker for a point and then rode Brascetta for the first 27 seconds in the second frame before Brascetta was able to twist and reverse Valenti to snatch the win in the waning seconds.
Blaise Butler (R-Fr., Belvidere, Ill.) fell 9-5 to sixth-ranked Jesse Dong at 157 pounds. The match went back and forth throughout. Butler was taken down in the first minute, but reversed Dong and took him down later in the period for a 4-3 edge. Dong escaped in the second, then took Butler down to take a 6-4 edge. Butler gained an escape point, but Dong scored off a late Butler shot to get a takedown of his own to push the lead to 8-5.
No. 7 Nick Sulzer (R-So., Cleveland, Ohio) lost a 3-1 decision to No. 5 Pete Yates at 165. Yates scored the lone offensive points with a takedown at the 2:06 mark of the first period. He notched an escape point later in the period.
Fausey broke through for Virginia with a 2-1 win over Austin Gabel in a tiebreaker. Fausey held Gabel at bay for the first 30 seconds of the tiebreaker, then escaped 11 seconds into the second portion to earn the riding time point.
Nye earned a 3-1 win over Nick Vetterlein at 184 pounds. With the score tied 1-1 in the third period, Nye shot in to take down Vetterlein at the 1:22 mark. He built his riding time to 1:15 before Vetterlein escaped with 10 seconds left and claimed the riding time point.
Wrestling up a weight class at 197 pounds, Stephen Doty (R-Jr., St. Louis, Mo.) suffered his first loss of the weekend, 10-5, to Derrick Borlie. Doty was taken down twice in the first period and could not recover.
Patrick Gillen (R-Fr., Shelton, Conn.) fell 7-2 to David Marone in the heavyweight bout. After a scoreless first period, Gillen was reversed and gave up two back points at the start of the second period.
Virginia returns to ACC competition next weekend. The Cavaliers travel to North Carolina Friday, then come home Sunday to play host to Duke.
