Caroline Miller Selected by Washington in NWSL Draft

INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. – Virginia senior forward Caroline Miller (Rockville, Md.) was selected by the Washington Spirit during Friday’s National Women’s Soccer League College Draft. Miller was selected by the Spirit in the second round with the 10th overall selection.

The 2012 ACC Offensive Player of the Year, Miller set single-season school records with 20 goals and 47 points this season. The conference leader in goals and points in 2012, she was one of just four players nationally to reach the 20-goal mark this season, and the first from the ACC in four years to accomplish the feat. A 2012 NSCAA first-team All-American and Hermann Trophy finalist, Miller ended her season on a school-record eight-game goal scoring streak, tallying 11 goals against those eight opponents, all of which made the NCAA Tournament. A two-time ACC Player of the Week, she was named first-team All-ACC for the second consecutive season and was selected to the ACC All-Tournament team as Virginia won the 2012 ACC Championship.

“I am so excited to be selected by my hometown team,” said Miller. “I have wanted to play professionally since I was a little girl and now I have the chance to do so. I am thankful for my time at UVa and the support I have gotten from everyone there. They are the reason I have this opportunity.”

Miller is the second former Cavalier to join the Spirit. Midfielder Lori Lindsey (Class of 2002) was allocated to Washington last week as members of the United States Women’s National Team were assigned to clubs. Becky Sauerbrunn (Class of 2007) was allocated to FC Kansas City.

The NWSL will have its inaugural season in 2013 with eight clubs: Boston Breakers, Chicago Red Stars, FC Kansas City, Portland Thorns FC, Seattle Reign FC, Sky Blue FC (New Jersey), Washington Spirit and Western New York Flash. Play will be begin this spring and the season will run through the summer.
