Virginia Sports Hall of Fame to Honor Dr. Frank McCue with the Distinguished Virginian Award

Portsmouth, Va. – The Virginia Sports Hall of Fame has selected Dr. Frank C. McCue III for its 2013 Distinguished Virginian Award, just the fourth time it has granted this honor to an individual for his contributions to education and athletics in the Commonwealth. The presentation of the award will take place on Saturday, April 27, 2013, as part of the 42nd Annual Hall of Fame Induction Banquet at the Renaissance Portsmouth Hotel & Waterfront Conference Center.

McCue was a doctor and medical assistant for the U.Va. athletic program from 1961 to 2003. During his tenure at U.Va., McCue treated many Cavalier student-athletes and other athletes and patients from the across the state, including Class of 2001 Inductee Barry Parkhill. “He’s an incon at the University for all that he’s done for this place,” Parkhill told U.Va. Alumni magazine. “He’s touched so many live, and it goes way beyond just taking care of athletes.”

McCue served as surgeon to the University of Richmond, the College of William & Mary and Virginia Military Institute athletics programs before they had their own doctors. In 1998, the McCue Society was created to provide a variety of scholarships in the field of sports medicine to both graduates and undergraduates. The society, made up of McCue’s former colleagues, fellows, athletic trainers, students and friends, also provides a forum for sports medicine education and research. Dr. McCue passed away on July 8, 2012.

“A novel could not explain the impact Dr. McCue has had on sports medicine and education,” says Eddie Webb, President of the Virginia Sports Hall of Fame & Museum. “Dr. McCue had received numerous honors prior, and what better way to celebrate his contributions by honoring him with the Distinguished Virginian Award.”
