CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – The Virginia (2-0) men’s lacrosse team, ranked No. 6 in this week’s USILA coaches and Nike/Inside Lacrosse media polls, leaves the cozy confines of Charlottesville for the first time this season on Saturday, making the trek to Long Island where the Stony Brook Seawolves (1-1) will play host inside Kenneth P. LaValle Stadium. Faceoff is set for noon and live statistics will be available at VirginiaSports.com.
There will be a live radio broadcast in the Charlottesville area on WINA 1070 AM, which will be simulcast as an audio webcast on VirginiaSports.com through Cavaliers Live. John Freeman will bring the play-by-play and Vincent Briedis will provide the analysis.
Virginia owns a 10-0 all-time record over the Seawolves and 2013 marks the eighth year in a row this series has been contested. Saturday is the third time since May 2010 that UVa will face Stony Brook at LaValle Stadium. The Cavaliers’ 2010 NCAA Quarterfinal appearance was a 10-9 triumph over the Seawolves at LaValle Stadium. The 2010 NCAA game wasn’t the only thriller in the series; in UVa’s last trip to Stony Brook in 2011, Steele Stanwick deposited an errant pass into an open net for the 11-10 overtime winner. The Cavaliers cruised to a 12-5 win at Klöckner Stadium the last time these two teams met in 2012. Stanwick joined the exclusive 100/100 club with two goals and three assists, pushing him over both 100 career goals and 100 career assists in the contest. Colin Briggs led the way with a career-high seven points on three goals and four assists.
The Cavaliers enter Saturday’s game on the heels of an 18-4 midweek victory over in-state rival VMI. Mark Cockerton led the way for UVa with six goals, helping the Cavaliers to their 30th midweek win in a row. Reigning ACC Offensive Player of the Week Nick O’Reilly added three goals and an assist in the winning cause.
Second-year head coach Jim Nagle brings a 1-1 Seawolves team into Saturday’s game, with a loss at Marist and a midweek win at Lafayette. Brody Eastwood leads the Seawolves with six goals, while Cole Millican leads the team with three assists. Jeff Tundo shares the team lead with Eastwood with six points. Dan Shaughnessy owns an 11.50 goals against average and is saving 39.5 percent of shots inside the pipes.
Virginia returns home on Tuesday to face Mount St. Mary’s. Faceoff is scheduled for 7 p.m. inside Klöckner Stadium. UVa follows the midweek tilt with a trip on March 1 to face Syracuse in the Carrier Dome.
