Alex Domijan Named National Team Indoors Most Outstanding Player

CHARLOTTESVILLE – Virginia junior Alex Domijan (Wesley Chapel, Fla.) was named the Most Outstanding Player of the ITA National Team Indoor Championships, the Intercollegiate Tennis Association announced on Friday. He is the first player in history to be named the MOP of the tournament twice, as he was also took the tournament’s top honor in 2011.

Domijan, the nation’s top-ranked singles player, went 4-0 in singles as Virginia captured its fifth NTI title in the past six years. The No. 1 Cavaliers defeated No. 24 Washington, No. 9 Duke, No. 4 Ohio State and No. 2 USC to win the championship.

Three of Domijan’s singles wins came against top-15 opponents. His 6-3, 3-6, 7-5 win over second-ranked Peter Kobelt of Ohio State clinched Virginia’s 4-3 semifinal win over the Buckeyes. He also had straight-set wins over No. 10 Emilio Gomez of USC in the final and No. 15 Michael Redlicki of Duke in the quarterfinals. Domijan has 10 wins this season against players currently in the top 20 of the ITA singles rankings.

Domijan was also the NTI All-Tournament Team selection at No. 2 singles and is joined on the team by Mitchell Frank, who was the selection at No. 3 singles. Frank went 2-0 in singles at the tournament, including his win over USC’s Roberto Quiroz that clinched the championship match.

Virginia will return to action on March 3 as it hosts No. 8 Oklahoma. Match time at the Snyder Tennis Center is scheduled for noon.
