PALM SPRINGS, Calif.–The Virginia softball team split a pair of games Thursday (Feb. 21) at the Mary Nutter Collegiate Classic in Palm Springs, Calif. The Cavaliers (5-5) defeated San Diego State, 5-2, after falling to Washington, 7-1, earlier in the day.

Against the Aztecs (6-6), the Cavaliers used a four-run third inning on the way to a 5-2 victory. In that third inning, senior Kristen Hawkins (Elizabeth, Pa.) singled and moved to second on a sophomore Peyton Larus (Midlothian, Va.) bunt single. After a groundout, sophomore Heidi Velk (Murrieta, Calif.) singled to load the bases and sophomore Megan Harris (Knoxville, Tenn.) singled to score Hawkins.

Junior Erica Cipolloni (Philadelphia, Pa.) walked to score Larus and Velk came home on an Aztec error. Harris scored later on a fielder’s choice.

In the fourth inning, Hawkins led off with her first home run of the season.

Senior Melanie Mitchell (White Plains, Md.) improved to 4-2 on the season, allowing two runs in seven innings with six strikeouts.

SDSU’s Rebecca Arbino fell to 5-3 after allowing five runs (three earned) in seven innings with 10 strikeouts.

In the first game, the Cavaliers fell to No. 16 Washington, 7-1.

Virginia scored its lone run in the fourth inning, when junior Karli Johnson (Lovettsville, Va.) doubled home classmate Marcy Bowdren (Fairfax Station, Va.), who had doubled to lead off the inning.

The Huskies (7-5) were led by Bryana Walker (5-2), who pitched a complete game, and Shawana Wright, who hit a three-run home run in the sixth inning. Walker allowed one run on three hits with 12 strikeouts.

Mitchell took the loss, allowing five runs (four earned) in six innings of work with four strikeouts. Freshman Aimee Chapdelaine (Pembroke Pines, Fla.) gave up two runs in an inning of relief.
