Cavaliers Claim 800 Free Relay on Day One of ACC Championships

GREENSBORO, N.C.-The Virginia men’s swimming and diving team won the 800 free relay as action concluded on the first night of the Atlantic Coast Conference Championships Wednesday (Feb. 27) at the Greensboro Aquatic Center in Greensboro, N.C.
The Cavaliers sit in second place with 68 points, two behind leader Florida State (70). Virginia Tech and North Carolina are tied for third with 66 points, followed by Georgia Tech (54), Boston College (48), NC State (30) and Duke (24).
The 800 free relay of freshman Nick Alexiou, senior Tom Barrett, sophomore David Ingraham and junior Parker Camp won in a time of 6:20.26, following a disqualification by NC State. That mark for the Cavaliers is an NCAA ‘A’ cut time.
It marks the 14th consecutive year Virginia has finished first in the 800 free relay and Alexiou’s leadoff 200 of 1:34.80 ranks fifth on UVa’s all-time list.
In the 200 medley relay, the team of junior Jack Murfee, freshman Yannick Kaeser, senior Brady Fox and sophomore Charlie Rommel placed fifth in a time of 1:27.01, the fourth-fastest time in school history.
The action continues Thursday (Feb. 28) with the 500 free, 200 IM, 50 free and 200 free relay being contested. Prelims start at 11 a.m. and finals begin at 7 p.m.
