CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – No. 6 in the USILA coaches and Nike/Inside Lacrosse media polls, the Virginia Cavaliers (4-0) will clash with the Syracuse Orange (1-1), No. 18 in the USILA coaches poll and tied for No. 16 in the Nike/Inside Lacrosse media poll, on Friday at the Carrier Dome. Faceoff is slated for 6 p.m. and live stats will be available at VirginiaSports.com.
The game will be the last regular season non-conference matchup in the heavyweight series, as Syracuse will join the ACC in all sports on July 1.
There will be a live radio broadcast in the Charlottesville area on WINA 1070 AM, which will be simulcast as an audio webcast on VirginiaSports.com through Cavaliers Live. John Freeman will bring the play-by-play and Doug Tarring will provide the analysis. Time Warner Sports Cable is televising the game in the New York State area. Mark Larson is calling the play-by-play and Dale Drypolcher is the analyst. Syracuse will provide a video stream for $6.95 through their athletics website.
The Cavaliers had won six regular-season games in a row against Syracuse before losing 12-10 in the Carrier Dome in 2011, the last time UVa traveled to Syracuse. The setback broke a string of three-straight UVa victories inside the Carrier Dome, the most by any Syracuse opponent. UVa owns the narrow 15-13 margin in the all-time series, including an exciting 14-10 UVa triumph in Charlottesville in 2012. These two programs have captured four of the last seven NCAA titles.
Friday’s game marks the first time in six years where both teams are not undefeated during the regular season meeting. Syracuse dropped its season-opening game to Albany in double overtime. This is the first time in five years where one of the teams at the time of the game is not ranked No. 1 in the nation. The last time UVa traveled to Syracuse (2011) the USILA coaches poll ranked both teams No. 1 in the nation, which served as only the second time in the history of the poll (established 1973) where two teams shared the No. 1 spot. It happened for the third time in 2012 (Loyola & UMass).
Mark Cockerton leads UVa with 17 goals, all scored over the last three games. Nick O’Reilly is running the offense with a team-best 13 assists and 19 points. Scott McWilliams has a team-high 19 ground balls and 14 caused turnovers. Dan Marino is saving 48.3 percent of shots against him and posting an 8.72 goals against average.
Syracuse head coach John Desko enters his 15th year at Syracuse where the Orange have won five NCAA national championships under his direction. JoJo Marasco leads Syracuse with six assists and nine points, while Dylan Donahue owns a team-best four goals. Chris Daddio is winning 59.1 percent (26-of-44) of his faceoffs, while Bobby Wardwell is posting an 8.64 goals against average and saving 50.0 percent of his shots.
Virginia returns home on Tuesday to host Vermont in the Cavaliers’ final midweek contest of the season. Faceoff at Klöckner Stadium is slated for 7 p.m.
