GREENSBORO, N.C.—The Virginia softball team dropped a close 2-1 decision at UNC Greensboro Sunday afternoon (March 3) in Greensboro, N.C. With the loss, the Cavaliers fell to 8-8 on the season, while the Spartans improved to 15-2.

UNCG’s Eileen Horsmon doubled off UVa senior Melanie Mitchell (White Plains, Va.) to score Kiah Ruffin to win the game in the bottom of the seventh. The only other hit the Spartans had was a home run by Lindsay Thomas in the fourth inning. Mitchell pitched 6.2 innings of work for her 99th career complete game.

Virginia’s only run came in the top of the fourth inning. Junior Erica Cipolloni singled to lead off, but was thrown out at home plate on a double by senior Kristen Hawkins (Elizabeth, Pa.). Hawkins then scored on a single up the middle by freshman Shannon McGinley (Prairie Village, Kan.).

Spartan starter Nicole Thomas allowed a run on five hits in 3.2 innings of work, while Raeanne Hanks (7-1) did not allow a run in 3.1 innings of relief to pick up the win.

The Cavaliers open their 2013 home campaign Wednesday (March 6) with a doubleheader against Seton Hall at 2 p.m. at The Park.
