Hilton Head, S.C. – The 19th-ranked Virginia women’s golf team is in ninth place following the opening round of play at the Darius Rucker Intercollegiate taking place at the Long Cove Club in Hilton Head, S.C. Virginia shot 17-over 301 during the first round and trails No. 8 Arkansas by eight strokes. Third-ranked North Carolina is in second place at 295.

Virginia was led by senior Brittany Altomare, who shot 1-over 72, and is tied for fifth place. Altomare is five shots behind tournament leader Emma Lavy of Arkansas, who finished the opening round at 3-under 68.

UVa’s Portland Rosen is in 18th place at 74 while Elizabeth Brightwell is 34th at 76. Briana Mao, the ACC Player of the Month for February, is in 52nd place after starting with a 79. Lauren Coughlin rounded out UVa’s scoring with a 10-over 81. She is in 63rd place.

Virginia will start its second round at 8:30 a.m. Saturday while paired with Arizona State and UCF. The Cavaliers will start on the first tee. The 15-team tournament wraps up Sunday.
