Top-Ranked Virginia Downs Baylor 6-1 in Outdoor Opener

WACO, Texas – The top-ranked Virginia men’s tennis team played outdoors for the first time this season as it opened a four-match road trip with a 6-1 win at No. 38 Baylor Monday. The Cavaliers improve to 8-0 this season with the victory, while the Bears fall to 10-3.

Virginia opened the match by winning the doubles point. Alex Domijan (Wesley Chapel, Fla.) and Mitchell Frank (Annandale, Va.) rallied from a 4-2 deficit to post an 8-5 win at No. 2 over Julian Lenz and Patrick Pradella. At No. 3, Justin Shane (Falls Church, Va.) and Julen Uriguen (Guatemala City, Guatemala) edged Marko Krickovic and Diego Galeano 9-7 to clinch the opening point for Virginia.

In singles, Baylor won four of the six first sets to grab momentum in the match. The Bears drew even, 1-1, as Tony Lupieri defeated Ryan Shane (Falls Church, Va.) 6-3, 6-2 at No. 4 singles. The other five matches all went to a decisive third set, with the Cavaliers gaining control of the match by winning all five.

The Cavaliers retook the lead, 2-1, as Justin Shane completed a 6-4, 2-6, 6-2 win at No. 6 over Roberto Maytin. At the top spot, Domijan rallied from losing the first set to down Pradella 4-6, 6-3, 6-4 to extend the advantage to 3-1. The victory was clinched at No. 5 as Mac Styslinger (Birmingham, Ala.) topped Krickovic 6-4, 4-6, 7-5. Frank added a 4-6, 6-4, 6-2 win at No. 3 over Mate Zsiga and Jarmere Jenkins (College Park, Ga.) closed out the match with a 6-7(2), 6-4, 6-3 win at No. 2 over Lenz.

Virginia continues its road trip on Wednesday as it visits No. 14 Texas A&M. Match time in College Station is 6 p.m. CT (7 p.m. ET).
