CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va.—The Virginia softball team dropped both ends of a doubleheader against James Madison, 3-2 and 10-2, Thursday (March 13) at The Park in Charlottesville. The Cavaliers fell to 9-12 on the season, while the Dukes improved to 16-6.

In the bottom of the first of the first game, junior Marcy Bowdren (Fairfax Station, Va.), sophomore Megan Harris (Knoxville, Tenn.) and junior Karli Johnson (Lovettsville, Va.) hit three consecutive singles to give the Cavaliers a 1-0 lead.

The Dukes would score single runs in the second, fourth and fifth innings before Harris doubled in the sixth and scored on a Johnson RBI single to cut the lead to 3-2.

Senior Melanie Mitchell (White Plains, Md.) pitched the 101st complete game of her career, one behind Lisa Palmer (102) for the most in UVa history. Mitchell (7-7) had six strikeouts while allowing three runs in seven innings.

Jailyn Ford (7-1) allowed two runs on eight strikeouts in seven innings to pick up the win for JMU.

In the second game, James Madison scored in five of six frames on the way to a 10-2 win in six innings.

Bowdren and senior Alex Skinkis (La Palma, Calif.) each had two hits and Skinkis scored on a classmate Taylor Williams (Woodbridge, Va.) RBI single in the fourth. Williams’ second hit of the game in the sixth drove in freshman Taylor Sarcone (Staten Island, N.Y.) to conclude the scoring.

Freshman Aimee Chapdelaine (Pemproke Pines, Fla.) allowed five runs in two innings of work in the loss (2-4). Classmate Emma Mitchell (Doswell, Va.) allowed five runs (four earned) in four frames of relief.

JMU’s Heather Kiefer (5-3) allowed just one run in six innings for the complete game win.

The Cavaliers return to action with a doubleheader back at The Park Thursday (March 14) against Longwood at 4 p.m.
