Virginia Divers Conclude NCAA Zone Championships

CHRISTIANSBURG, Va.—The Virginia divers concluded action at the 2013 NCAA Zone A Diving Championships Sunday (March 17) at the Christiansburg Aquatic Center in Christiansburg, Va.
“We started off the meet Saturday morning rough through the first two dives, but after that the entire team started picking up steam as the meet went along,” UVa diving coach Rich MacDonald said. “With some great finishes, we had a total of 18 finalists this weekend. It was a great way for the team to end their season.”
The men finished second with 173 points, second for the fourth consecutive year behind Virginia Tech (260) and ahead of Princeton (62), Harvard (42) and UConn (28).
The women placed second with 104 points, the highest finish in school history, behind Virginia Tech (237) and ahead of UConn (63), Rutgers (46) and JMU (42).
On the men’s platform diving event, sophomore JB Kolod placed second with 752.45, while freshman Carl Buergler was sixth with 612.00 and classmate Colby Shinholser was seventh with 597.60. Fellow freshman Jordan Sacks was 12th with 521.00 points.
“JB was spectacular throughout the whole meet,” MacDonald said. “He is continuing to get better and better every meet and this weekend was no exception.”
Kolod will compete in the NCAA Championships, to be held March 28-30 in Indianapolis, Ind.
Sophomore Laura Gartrell was fourth and broke the school record on the women’s platform with 455.45 points, while freshman Becca Corbett was fifth with (448.90). Freshman Katie Warburg was ninth with 384.55, while junior Kelly Lloyd was 10th in 370.20.
The women accumulated 62 of their 104 total points for the weekend on Sunday.
Next up, the women’s NCAA Championships will be held in Indianapolis, Ind., March 21-23. The men’s NCAA meet will also be in Indianapolis, March 28-30.
