No. 9 Virginia (6-6, 0-4 ACC) at American (5-6, 3-0 Patriot League)

April 1, 2013CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – The No. 9 Virginia women’s lacrosse team (6-6, 0-4 ACC) plays its third-straight road game on Tuesday, April 2, taking on American (5-6, 3-0 Patriot League) at 4 p.m. at Jacobs Field in Washington, D.C.

This is just the second meeting between the two teams and the first time they have faced one another in the regular season. Virginia defeated American, 19-3, in an NCAA Tournament first-round game in Charlottesville in 2003.

American brings a five-game win streak into the contest including a 10-9 overtime victory over No. 12 Johns Hopkins last Wednesday (March 27). American trailed 7-2 at halftime, but the Eagles outscored the Blue Jays 6-1 in the second half, including notching a goal with 57 seconds remaining in regulation to force OT. Kimberly Collins scored an unassisted goal with eight seconds left in the first overtime to secure the upset for the Eagles.

This will be the third road game in seven days for Virginia, who won 16-12 at Old Dominion last Wednesday (March 27), before falling 10-7 at Boston College on Saturday (March 30).

This will be the second-straight game for UVa against a team nicknamed “Eagles”. The Cavaliers were upset by the BC Eagles on Saturday, falling to an unranked team for the first time this season and just the second time since 2010. In the last four seasons, UVa is 23-2 against teams who are not ranked in the IWLCA Coaches’ Poll.

Casey Bocklet (So., South Salem, N.Y.) did not score a goal or dish out an assist in the Boston College loss. It was the first time this season Bocklet did not earn points in a game. Bocklet ranks fifth in the ACC in points-per-game, averaging 3.58. Bocklet ranks eighth in goals (2.42) and seventh in assists (1.17).

Ashlee Warner (Jr., Corning, N.Y.) and Morgan Stephens (So., Olney, Md.) have both earned points in every game this season. Warner has scored a goal in each of the last six contests, including netting a pair at BC. Stephens kept her streak alive by picking up a ground ball and scoring on the other end with 1:32 left in the game.

Daniela Eppler (So., Baltimore, Md.) caused four turnovers in the Boston College game, the most by a Cavalier in a game this season. Eppler also had two ground balls in the game.

Liza Blue (So., Butler, Md.) scored her first goal of the season at Boston College. Blue became the 14th different Cavalier to score a goal this season. Brooke Boyd (Fr., Baltimore, Md.) logged the first point of her collegiate career with an assist on Blue’s goal.

Liz Colgan (Jr., Cockeysville, Md.), who has started the last four games for the Cavaliers in goal, is second in the ACC with a .481 save percentage. Colgan is allowing 8.84 goals per game.

American’s goalkeeper, Teal Harrison, is second in the Patriot League with 8.91 saves per game and owns a 11.71 goals-against average.

Virginia averages 9.58 turnovers per game, the lowest average among ACC teams. Virginia is averaging 10.83 goals per game, while American scores 11.64 per game.

The Cavaliers will close out the regular-season with three home games beginning with a 7 p.m. game on Sunday, Nov. 17 against Northwestern at Klöckner Stadium. Virginia hosts Johns Hopkins (April 11) and Virginia Tech (April 17) before heading to the ACC Tournament (April 25-28) in Chapel Hill, N.C.

Single-game tickets to Virginia lacrosse games are $8 (adult general admission) and $6 (youth, senior, faculty/staff general admission). Tickets are also available on game day at the Klöckner Stadium ticket windows beginning one hour prior to the game.
