GREENSBORO, N.C.–Virginia softball senior Melanie Mitchell has been named the Atlantic Coast Conference Pitcher of the Week, the conference announced Tuesday (April 2).

A native of White Plains, Md., Mitchell led the Cavaliers to a series win over Boston College, pitching complete games in both Virginia wins over the Eagles. In Friday’s 3-2 win, Mitchell recorded 10 strikeouts, allowing two runs in seven innings.

In Sunday’s 4-1 victory, Mitchell tied the program’s all-time record for wins with 74 and became the ACC’s seventh pitcher to record 1,000 career strikeouts. She had 13 strikeouts and allowed just one unearned run in seven innings.

This is the senior’s first weekly award of 2013 and the fifth of her career. Mitchell will look to set UVa’s all-time record for wins Wednesday (April 3) in a doubleheader at George Mason in Fairfax, Va.
