The Cavaliers (16-19) come into the doubleheader after dropping a three-game series at No. 25 North Carolina over the weekend. After falling in the first game, 5-1, UVa lost two tight games by the identical score of 2-1.

Junior Marcy Bowdren (Fairfax Station, Va.) continues to lead Virginia in batting with a .336 average. Velk scored the lone Cavalier runs in the first two games against the Tar Heels.

In the circle, senior Melanie Mitchell (White Plains, Md.) is second in the ACC and 11th in the nation with 194 strikeouts. She is six strikeouts shy of recording the 10th 200-strikeout season in program history. Mitchell and Michelle Collins (1993-95) each have three seasons with 200 strikeouts, while Kristen Dennis (2001-02) has two and Stacey Zagol (1998) was one.

Mitchell is 12-11 on the season with a 2.38 ERA in 156.0 innings of work. Freshman Aimee Chapdelaine (Pembroke Pines, Fla.) is 4-7 with a 4.10 ERA after allowing just one earned run in the second game against UNC, while stranding 14 runners.

Delaware State is 10-21 on the season and has won five games in a row, including a sweep of Morgan State over the weekend. Nicole Gazzolla leads the Hornets with a .390 batting average, while Rochelle Sablay leads the squad with 24 RBI. DSU has three pitchers who share the time in the circle including Jennifer Fischbach (3-6, 3.34 ERA), Stephanie Sarris (5-6, 3.65) and Rachel Meagley (2-9, 3.92).

The two teams split a doubleheader the last time they played with the Cavaliers winning the first game, 2-0, before falling, 5-3, in the second game on April 13, 2011.

Up next, the Cavaliers travel to Tallahassee, Fla., April 14-15 for a three-game series at Florida State. Sunday’s doubleheader is scheduled for 1 p.m., while Monday night’s 7 p.m. contest will be broadcast live on ESPNU.
