MESA, Ariz.—Former Cavalier swimming standout Matt McLean won the 400-meter freestyle at the Arena Mesa Grand Prix Thursday in Mesa, Arizona. The meet featured many of the nation’s top swimmers as a lead up to the World Championship Trials, held in Indianapolis, Ind, in June.

McLean, the UVa volunteer assistant coach, was making his first long course meters appearance since the London Olympics, where he won gold with the U.S. 4×200-meter free relay. McLean claimed the 400m free in a time of 3:51.94, while also placing ninth in the 200m free in 1:50.00.

Also at the Arena Grand Prix, incoming freshman Leah Smith touched fourth in the 800m free (8:43.16), fifth in the 200m free (2:01.32) and 400m free (4:14.23) and 12th in the 100m free (57.00).

In addition, incoming freshman Andrea D’Arrigo earned bronze in the 400m free at the Italian National Championships in 3:50.47 (3:49.28 in prelims), while placing sixth in 200m free in 1:48.91.
