CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va.—The Virginia softball team travels to Liberty Wednesday (April 24) to play a doubleheader at Liberty Softball Field in Lynchburg, Va. The two games will close out the non-conference schedule for the Cavaliers (18-25).

UVa is coming off a tough weekend series against NC State that saw the Wolfpack come away with a three-game sweep. Senior pitcher Melanie Mitchell (White Plains, Md.) pitched a four hitter in the finale on Sunday, but the Cavaliers fell 2-0.

Mitchell leads UVa in the circle with a 13-15 record and is 10th in the nation with 232 strikeouts. She also has a 2.48 ERA, which ranks fifth in the Atlantic Coast Conference.

Junior Marcy Bowdren (Fairfax Station, Va.) has a .308 batting average that leads the team and is sixth toughest in the nation to strikeout, averaging 43.3 at-bats between strikeouts.

Liberty comes into Wednesday with a 19-28 record after being swept by Winthrop over the weekend in Rock Hill, S.C.

Katie Zavodny leads the Flames with a .412 batting average, while Amber Donovan leads the squad with seven home runs. Annah Jo Brittingham (8-9, 4.28 ERA) and Chandler Ball (8-12, 4.85 ERA) share the majority of the innings for Liberty in the pitching circle.

In the last meeting between the schools, Virginia swept a doubleheader, 6-5 and 7-1, on April 25, 2012 in Charlottesville.

Up next, the Cavaliers close out the regular season with a three-game series against in state rival Virginia Tech April 28-29. Sunday’s doubleheader is scheduled for a noon start, while Monday’s single game is slated for 7 p.m. and will be broadcast live on ESPNU.
