Rockville, Md. – Virginia junior golfer Denny McCarthy earned a spot in the field for the USGA’s 2013 U.S. Amateur Championship by winning a qualifying tournament in his hometown of Rockville, Md. McCarthy shot 131 to win the 36-hole event by seven strokes.

It marks the fifth consecutive year McCarthy has qualified for the U.S. Amateur Championship.

He becomes the second Cavalier to gain entry into this year’s tournament. Sophomore Kyle Kochevar (Glen Ellyn, Ill.) qualified by placing second at Victory Links Golf Course in in Blaine, Minn., on July 12.

This year’s U.S. Amateur Championship will take place at The Country Club in Brookline, Mass., Aug. 12-18.

Entries to the U.S. Amateur Championship are open to amateur golfers with an up-to-date men’s Handicap Index not exceeding 2.4 under the USGA Handicap System.
