CHARLOTTESVILLE – The Virginia women’s soccer team will open the 2013 regular season this weekend as it hosts the inaugural Klöckner Classic. The seventh-ranked Cavaliers host a field that includes reigning NCAA Champion and preseason No. 1 North Carolina, No. 9 Santa Clara and VCU.
Friday’s doubleheader begins at 5 p.m. with North Carolina playing Santa Clara, followed by Virginia against VCU at 7:30 p.m. On Sunday, North Carolina meets VCU at noon with Virginia and Santa Clara to follow at 2:30 p.m.
Tickets for each day are $7 for adult general admission and $5 for youth, senior and faculty/staff general admission. Group tickets (20 or more) are $4.
The Cavaliers return eight starters and 17 letterwinners from last year’s ACC Championship squad. Six of Virginia’s top seven goal-scorers from 2012 return, including 2012 freshman All-American Makenzy Doniak (So., Chino Hills, Calif.) and preseason All-American Morgan Brian (Jr., St. Simons Island, Ga.).
Virginia won its only exhibition contest of the preseason, downing No. 25 Illinois 3-0 on Aug. 16 in Maple City, Mich. Junior midfielder Danielle Colaprico (Freehold, N.J.) scored twice to lead the Cavaliers to the victory.
VCU was picked to finish third in the Atlantic 10 this season. The Rams downed James Madison 2-1 in their only exhibition game. Santa Clara, the preseason favorite to win the West Coast Conference, defeated Sacramento State 4-1 last week in an exhibition. North Carolina is the consensus preseason No. 1 team after winning its 21st NCAA Championship last year.
Friday’s game will be the fifth all-time meeting between Virginia and VCU with the Cavaliers holding a 3-0-1 advantage in the series. The Cavaliers have won all three previous meetings at Klöckner, including the last meeting between the schools in 2008, a 5-0 UVa victory. Virginia holds a 3-2-1 edge in the series with Santa Clara. The teams played to a scoreless draw in the last meeting between the teams in the 2007 Santa Clara/adidas Classic. The last meeting in Charlottesville was a 4-1 Cavalier victory in the 2003 Virginia Nike Soccer Classic.
The Klöckner Classic begins a seven-game homestand for the Cavaliers to open the 2013 season.
