CHARLOTTESVILLE – The No. 6 Virginia women’s soccer team continues its season-opening seven-game homestand Friday as it hosts No. 7 Penn State. Game time at Klöckner Stadium at 5:30 p.m., as the contest is the first game of a Cavalier soccer doubleheader. The No. 20 Virginia men’s soccer team hosts No. 10 Louisville in its season opener at 8 p.m.
Tickets are $7 for adults and $5 for youth, seniors and faculty/staff; one ticket is good for admission into both matches of the doubleheader. Group ticket orders of 20 or more tickets are $4. Free parking is available in the University Hall lots.
The Cavaliers (2-0) are coming off a strong opening weekend of the season as they won the inaugural Klöckner Classic. Virginia defeated VCU 4-2 on Friday and No. 9 Santa Clara 4-0 on Sunday. Junior midfielder Morgan Brian (St. Simons Island, Ga.) was named Tournament MVP after recording a goal and three assists in the victories. Sophomore forward Brittany Ratcliffe (Williamstown, N.J.), who leads the team with three goals this season, senior midfielder Annie Steinlage (Grand Haven, Mich.) and sophomore defender Emily Sonnett (Marietta, Ga.) joined Brian on the Klöckner Classic All-Tournament Team.
The Nittany Lions (1-0-1) opened the season last week by hosting the Penn State Invitational. In their season opener, they rallied for a 2-2 tie with West Virginia, scoring twice in the final 10 minutes. Penn State posted its first win of the season on Sunday, downing Hofstra 2-1.
Penn State leads the all-time series 7-2-1, including a 3-0-0 record in Charlottesville. The Nittany Lions have won at Klöckner in each of the past two seasons. Last year, Penn State defeated Virginia 3-1 in the season opener. The Cavaliers haven’t defeated the Nittany Lions in the regular season since a 1997 win in Happy Valley. Virginia’s last victory over Penn State came in the second round of the 2009 NCAA Tournament as the Cavaliers scored six goals in a 20-minute span to rally from a 2-0 halftime deficit for a 6-2 victory.
The Cavaliers continue their homestand on Sunday as they host in-state foe Richmond. Game time is set for 5 p.m.
