WASHINGTON, D.C. – midfielder Morgan Brian (St. Simons Island, Ga.) scored her first goal for the United States Women’s National Team during Tuesday’s 7-0 victory over Mexico in a friendly at RFK Stadium. Brian, who had entered the game just two minutes earlier, scored the final goal of the night in the 72nd minute.
“This night was just incredible,” said Brian. “It was amazing to have the support of all my UVa teammates, my parents, my old club coach, all of them here. I couldn’t imagine having a better game with them in the crowd. Abby (Wambach) played me a great ball to set up my first goal with the national team. I was glad to be able to share tonight with so many people who have helped me reach this level.”
Brian made her second appearance for the national team as she entered the game as a substitute in the 70th minute. Two minutes later, she collected a ball near the top of the box and fired a left footed shot that deflected off the Mexican defender guarding her and past the keeper for her first international goal. It was the seventh and final goal of the evening for the United States.
Brian becomes the fourth Virginia player to score a goal for the US Women’s National Team. Angela Hucles (Class of 1999) had 13 international goals, while Amanda Cromwell (Class of 1991) and Lori Lindsey (Class of 2001) each scored once for the national team.
Brian will be back in action for the Cavaliers on Friday as they host Rutgers as part of the Virginia Nike Soccer Classic. Game time at Klöckner Stadium is 7 p.m. William & Mary plays Seton Hall in the first game of the tournament at 4 p.m.
