Charlottesville, Va. – The Virginia men’s golf team will open its 2013 fall season Friday at the Northern Open to be held at Rich Harvest Farms in Sugar Grove, Ill. The 54-hole event runs Friday through Sunday at the par-72, 7,236-yard course.

The tournament field includes Ball State, Central Florida, Houston, Indiana, Kentucky, Liberty, Louisville, Miami (Ohio), North Texas, Northern Illinois, Ohio State, San Diego, St. Mary’s, UT Arlington and Virginia.

Virginia’s lineup for the season opener will feature juniors David Pastore, Denny McCarthy and Ji Soo Park, sophomore Nick Tremps and freshman Jimmy Stanger.

Ben Rusch, the 2012 ACC individual champion who redshirted last season, will not join the team for the tournament. He will play in the Omega European Masters at Crans-sur-Sierre in Switzerland.

Last season McCarthy won the first tournament of his career at the Northern Open. He used a final round of 3-under 68 to take medalist honors by three strokes at 3-over 216. Virginia tied for fifth place in the 11-team field with a score of 914.

Indiana, which returns for this year’s tournament, won the team title last fall at 36-over 888.

Teams are slated to tee off starting at 8 a.m. each day of the tournament.
