CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – The No. 7 Virginia field hockey closes out the weekend with a top-10 showdown against No. 8 Old Dominion on Sunday, Sept. 8 at 1 p.m. at L.R. Hill Sports Complex in Norfolk.Virginia (3-0) is looking to start the season with a 4-0 record for the fourth time in the last six years after defeating Yale, 6-1, on Friday afternoon.
The Cavaliers continue to get productivity out of their first-year players with four of the six goals against Yale being scored by rookies. Freshman Caleigh Foust (Bryn Mawr, Pa.) scored a hat trick against Yale, including the game-winner. Riley Tata (Virginia Beach, Va.) has scored a goal in each of the first three games.
Senior Elly Buckley (Scarborough, Perth, Australia) scored UVa’s other two goals in the Yale contest. Buckley also had an assist, giving her a team-leading 12 points for the season. Fellow seniors Carissa Vittese (Cherry Hill, N.J.) and Chloe Pendlebury (Perth, Australia) had two assists apiece against Yale.
Sunday’s game will be the second time this season the Cavaliers have taken on another team ranked in the top-10 after defeating No. 6 Penn State, 4-2, last Sunday (Sept. 1).
Old Dominion, ranked No. 8 in the preseason NFHCA poll, opened the season with a 3-1 loss to No. 6 Penn State. On Friday, the Monarchs were blanked, 3-0, by No. 2 Maryland. The Monarchs’ schedule doesn’t get any easier as they play next weekend at No. 1 North Carolina and then No. 10 Duke.
Old Dominion holds a 33-12 advantage in the all-time series against the Cavaliers. Virginia defeated the Monarchs, 5-4, last season in Charlottesville, but fell 4-1 in 2011 during UVa’s last trip to Norfolk.
For the second consecutive year, Old Dominion will host the NCAA Division I national title game along with the national semifinals on Nov. 22 and 24 at the L.R. Hill Sports Complex.
The Cavaliers return home on Wednesday, Sept. 11 for a 6 p.m. midweek contest against Richmond. Admission is free for all regular-season home games played at Turf Field.
