UVa falls to No. 21 Western Kentucky, 3-1

BOWLING GREEN, Ky.—The Virginia volleyball team dropped a 3-1 decision (25-23, 18-25, 25-19, 25-19) to No. 21 Western Kentucky Friday night (Sept. 13) on the first day of the Western Kentucky Invitational. With the loss, the Cavaliers fell to 4-3 on the season, while the Hilltoppers improved to 6-3.
WKU hit .310 to UVa’s .264 and led in blocks, 9-4. Virginia had the edge in service aces, 7-6, but had 11 errors to the Hilltoppers’ seven.
The Cavaliers were led by junior Tori Janowski (Sterling, Va.), who had a match-high 19 kills, and sophomore Lauren Fuller (Manhattan Beach, Calif.) posted a double-double with 48 assists and 13 digs. Both UVa middles had good outings, with senior Mallory Woolridge (Glen Allen, Va.) hitting .556 with 10 kills and no errors and junior Morgan Blair (Long Valley, N.J.) hitting .600 with seven kills and one error on 10 attempts.
In the first set, the Cavaliers had a lead of 23-20, but the Hilltoppers won five straight points including three kills by Haley Bodway. Virginia hit .423 with 14 kills and only three errors in the second on the way to a 25-18 win.
The third set saw six ties, but WKU claimed the set, 25-19, after earning six of the last seven points. In the fourth, the Hilltoppers hit .385, while holding the Cavaliers to a .200 hitting percentage en route to a 25-19 victory.
The WKU Invitational continues Saturday when the Cavaliers face UNLV at 2 p.m. and Ohio at 6 p.m.
