No. 5 Virginia Shuts Out Maine, 2-0

BURLINGTON, Vt. – The No. 5 Virginia field hockey opened up the Sheraton Catamount Classic with a 2-0 victory over Maine.
A deflection off a Maine stick on a shot from Jess Orrett (Wells, Somerset, England) in the first two minutes of the game was the only score in the game until freshman Lucy Hyams (Whitstable, Kent, England) knocked in a shot with 38 seconds remaining to cap off the Cavaliers’ 2-0 victory.
“There were definitely challenges in the game, but the team was able to meet those challenges,” said head coach Michele Madison. “I thought the team adjusted to the way Maine played. We were able to shut down the interior big ball and create some attack off that.”
With the victory, Virginia improved to 6-0 on the season. Maine fell to 2-4.
Virginia’s first goal was set up by Orrett who drove into the circle and fired off a shot that was deflected into the net off a defender’s stick. Hyams goal was scored off a corner opportunity. Elly Buckley (Scarborough, Perth, Australia) took the initial shot off the penalty corner. Hadley Bell (Shaker Heights, Ohio) picked up the loose ball after the shot, taking a shot of her own that deflected off the goalie’s pads. Hyams corralled the rebound, taking the shot to score her second goal of the season.
Virginia held a 17-10 advantage in shots, including holding a 13-5 edge in the second half. The Cavaliers had six second-half penalty corners to Maine’s two.
Junior goalkeeper Jenny Johnstone (Paisley, Scotland) logged four saves to improve her record to 6-0.
The Cavaliers finish off the tournament on Sunday, Sept. 15 at 12 p.m., taking on host Vermont. Free live streaming video will be available for the game.
Virginia returns home on Friday, Sept. 20, hosting No. 1 North Carolina at 6 p.m. at Turf Field.
