EARLYSVILLE, Va. – The Virginia women’s cross country team won the team championship of the Virginia/Panorama Farms Invitational Saturday at Panorama Farms in Earlysville, Va. The Cavaliers had five of the top 14 finishers to take their second title in the five-year history of the meet. The Virginia men’s cross country team finished third at the event.

The women won the 5K meet with a score of 42 points, finishing ahead of 14th-ranked William & Mary (67 pts) and Eastern Kentucky (118 pts).

Senior Barbara Strehler (Richmond, Va.) finished second in a time of 16:32.7 to lead the Cavaliers. First years Maria Hauger (Shakopee, Minn.) and Sarah Fakler (Phoenix, Ariz.) followed in sixth and ninth place respectively. Junior Kathleen Stevens (Blacksburg, Va.) was 11th and first-year Sara Sargent (Philadelphia, Pa.) was 14th to round out Virginia’s scoring five.

“It always feels good to win a meet, especially on your home course,” said women’s cross country coach Todd Morgan. “We take a lot of pride in running well at Panorama Farms. Our first goal is we want to be better than we were last year. Obviously we have a lot of new faces out there. We wanted to come out and start the year in a positive direction. We have a good group with a lot to prove and this was another step towards accomplishing the goals we have for our team in November.”

The 16th-ranked Cavalier men finished third at the 8K meet with 101 points, behind North Carolina (58 pts) and No. 11 Eastern Kentucky (76 pts).

Sophomore Kyle King (Yorktown, Va.) was Virginia’s top finisher, placing 10th in a time of 24:03.4. Redshirt-freshman Adam Visokay (Ruckersville, Va.) was 19th, senior Chris Foley (Chantilly, Va.) was 20th, junior Drew Paisley (Virginia Beach, Va.) was 23rd, and sophomore Zach Herriott (Kansas City, Mo.) was 29th to round out the scoring five for the Cavaliers.

“It is always disappointing to lose at home, but it is part of the process,” said men’s cross country coach Pete Watson. “We got what we wanted to get out of this meet. We don’t want to be peaking on September 28, we want to keep building to be at our best in November. I think we are ahead of where we were as a team last year at this point. Adam and Zach had never run an 8K before. This meet was a good learning experience and we got some valuable lessons.”

The Virginia men return to action on Oct. 4 as they travel to South Bend, Ind., for the Notre Dame Invitational. The women next compete on Oct. 19 at the Pre-Nationals in Terre Haute, Ind.
