CHARLOTTESVILLE – The Virginia women’s soccer team makes its first appearance at Klöckner Stadium as the nation’s top-ranked squad as it hosts No. 22 Maryland Sunday. Game time is 2 p.m., and the game will be broadcast online by NSCAAtv.com.
Sunday’s game is Cavman’s Crew Day, with a face-painter, balloon artist and UVa wristbands for kids. All fans will receive the first set of 2013 Virginia women’s soccer trading cards.
The Cavaliers (10-0, 4-0 ACC) play at home for the first time in 17 days after concluding a three-game road trip. After wins at Boston College and Pittsburgh last week, Virginia rallied from a 2-0 halftime deficit for a 3-2 win at Duke Thursday. The current 10-game win streak is the second longest in school history, topped only by a 15-game win streak to open the 1990 season.
Virginia leads the ACC and ranks second nationally in scoring at 3.60 goals per game. The Cavaliers boast the league’s top two scorers, sophomore forward Makenzy Doniak (Chino Hills, Calif.), who has nine goals and five assists for 23 points, and junior midfielder Morgan Brian (St. Simons Island, Ga.), who has seven goals and eight assists for 22 points. Virginia is the only team in the nation to have two 20-point scorers this season.
The Terrapins (6-4, 2-2) are coming off a 5-0 loss at No. 3 Notre Dame on Thursday. Maryland has one ranked win this season, downing then-No. 3 Wake Forest 1-0 last Sunday in College Park.
The Cavaliers own a 27-5-4 all-time lead in the series, including a 13-0-1 record in Charlottesville. Virginia has more wins over Maryland than any other opponent. Last season the teams split a pair of games. The Terrapins won the regular season game, 3-1, in College Park and the Cavaliers won 4-0 in the ACC Tournament final.
Virginia continues the homestand on Oct. 6 as it hosts Clemson. Game time is set for 2 p.m.
