Complete Draws

CHARLOTTESVILLE – The Virginia men’s tennis team opened play Friday at the UVa Fall Classic, the team’s final home tournament of the fall season. The Cavaliers had four singles players and two doubles teams advance to flight semifinals during the first day of play.

Sophomore Harrison Richmond (Pawleys Island, S.C.), the top seed in the Blue Singles draw, advanced to the semifinals with a pair of wins. He topped Joe Hill of George Mason 6-2, 7-5 in the first round and Garik Yedigarian of Coastal Carolina, 3-6, 6-0, 6-0, in the quarterfinals.

Senior Justin Shane (Falls Church, Va.), the No. 2 seed in the Orange Singles draw, opened play with a 6-0, 6-0 win over Edward Becker of Longwood. Later in the day he topped Zach McCourt of Princeton, 7-5, 6-2, to reach the semifinals.

First-year J.C. Aragone (Yorba Linda, Calif.) reached the semifinals of the White Singles draw, where he is the No. 2 seed. He downed Stan Vaughan of Liberty in the first round, 6-2, 6-3, before defeating Roman Samed of Coastal Carolina 6-4, 6-3 in the quarterfinals.

Sophomore Jonathan Cornish (London, England) won both his matches in the Gold Singles draw. He opened the day with a 6-4, 6-3 victory over Jacob Svensson of VCU before topping fourth-seeded Maxi Branth of James Madison, 6-3, 0-6, 7-6.

In doubles, both Cavalier teams are in the semifinals of their flights. In the Blue Doubles draw, top-seeded Richmond and Shane received a quarterfinal bye. In the Gold Doubles draw, Cornish teamed with sophomore Alex Scheinman (Los Angeles, Calif.) for an 8-4 quarterfinal victory over Samed and Rick Timmerman of Coastal Carolina.

The tournament continues Saturday and concludes Sunday at the Snyder Tennis Center. Admission is free.
