CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – The No. 5 Virginia field hockey team defeated No. 6 Boston College, 1-0, in double overtime Friday night (Oct. 11) at Turf Field.

Junior Kelsey LeBlanc (Haverfgord, Pa.) broke the scoreless tie 3:24 into the second overtime period, tapping in a shot from freshman Lucy Hyams (Whitstable, Kent, England) from the top of the circle after the Cavaliers second penalty corner opportunity of the period.

“Boston College has a very good goalkeeper in Leah Settipane and we struggle with them because of their goal tending,” said head coach Michele Madison. “You really have to be composed to go around her. We just weren’t getting the tips on the post that were part of the game plan. We moved the ball around pretty well, but BC was right there. I was really happy with how we came out and played really composed in the first half. With the leading and the passing, we were just passing around Boston College. In ACC play, each game just gets more difficult now with how good every team is in this conference.”

With the victory, Virginia improved to 14-2 (2-2 ACC) while Boston College fell to 10-3 (1-2 ACC).

Senior Elly Buckley (Scarborough, Perth, Australia) got a ball into the cage in regulation, but the goal was whistled off because of a penalty committed by another UVa player. Boston College also saw the ball go into the cage, but that play was whistled dead on a penalty before the shot was fired off.

Virginia had an opportunity at the end of the first overtime when the Cavaliers earned a short corner with 26 seconds remaining. Buckley took a shot from the top of the circle with the clock at zero, but it went wide of the net.

Virginia took 26 total shots in the game, including 18 in regulation, to Boston College’s eight. The Eagles did not get off a shot in either overtime period.

Junior goalkeeper Jenny Johnstone (Paisley, Scotland) made three saves, playing the entire 88:24 in goal. Settipane ended the game with nine saves for the Eagles.

The goal was LeBlanc’s third of the year with Hyams logging her seventh assist.

The Cavaliers finish off the weekend by hosting William & Mary on Sunday, Oct. 13 at 1 p.m. at Turf Field. Immediately following that game, No. 6 Boston College will take on Longwood (5-7, 3-0 NorPac) in a neutral site game at Turf Field. Admission is free for all 2013 Virginia field hockey regular-season home games.
