CHARLOTTESVILLE – The top-ranked Virginia women’s soccer team begins a three-game road trip Sunday with a visit to No. 11 Wake Forest. Game time at Spry Stadium in Winston-Salem is 1 p.m.
Virginia (13-0, 7-0 ACC) is the nation’s only unbeaten and untied team. In their fourth week as the nation’s consensus No. 1 team, the Cavaliers lead the nation in scoring at 3.31 goals per game. That attack is led by junior midfielder Morgan Brian (St. Simons Island, Ga.) and sophomore forward Makenzy Doniak (Chino Hills, Calif.), who rank second and third in the ACC in points with 26 and 25 respectively. Virginia is the only school in the nation with two 25-point scorers this season.
The Cavaliers are coming off a 3-2 double-overtime victory over No. 5 Notre Dame Thursday at Klöckner Stadium. Brian headed in a corner kick from junior Danielle Colaprico (Freehold, N.J.) in the 101st minute to keep Virginia’s perfect record intact.
The Demon Deacons (8-2-2, 3-2-2 ACC) have had 10 days to prepare for Sunday’s game since a 1-1 draw at Notre Dame on Oct. 3 in their last game. Wake Forest is coming off a four-game road trip and hasn’t played at home in 24 days. The Deacons are 5-0-1 this season at Spry Stadium.
Virginia leads the all-time series 13-7-3, including a 6-3-2 mark in Winston-Salem. The Demon Deacons have won the last two matchups, including a 2-1 victory last season in Charlottesville. The Cavaliers are winless (0-1-2) in their last three trips to Spry Stadium, being shutout each time. Virginia’s last win at Wake Forest was a 2-0 victory in the second round of the 2006 NCAA Tournament.
Virginia continues its three-game tour of Tobacco Road on Thursday at NC State before heading to Chapel Hill next Sunday for a clash with reigning NCAA Champion North Carolina. The Cavaliers return home on Oct. 24 for matchup with Miami.
