CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va—The Virginia volleyball team fell to No. 13 North Carolina, 25-12, 26-24 and 25-19, before a capacity crowd of 836 at Memorial Gymnasium on Friday night (Oct. 18). With the loss, the Cavaliers fell to 10-9 on the season (3-4 ACC), while UNC improved to 17-1 (6-1 ACC).
Junior Tori Janowski (Sterling, Va.) and Haley Kole (Tallahassee, Fla.) each had 12 kills to lead Virginia.
The Tar Heels claimed the first set, 25-12, after hitting .303 with 15 kills, while holding the Cavaliers to three kills and six errors.
In a very close second set that saw 17 ties, North Carolina was victorious after Virginia missed a serve at set point, 24-23, followed by kills from Leigh Andrew and Victoria McPherson, to win 26-24.
In the third set, both teams hit well, with UVa earning a .414 hitting percentage to UNC’s .387, but North Carolina used four service aces to go on to a 25-19 win.
Jovana Bjelica (11 kills) and Kayla Berringer (10 kills) each hit over .500 for North Carolina.
The Cavaliers return to action Saturday when they face NC State at 7 p.m. at Memorial Gymnasium. The first 100 fans in attendance will receive free Virginia volleyball t-shirts.
