No. 6 Virginia Defeats No. 8 Duke, 4-3

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – The No. 6 Virginia field hockey team (15-3, 3-2 ACC) defeated No. 8 Duke (10-4, 2-2 ACC), 4-3, on Friday night at Turf Field in Charlottesville.
Senior Elly Buckley (Scarborough, Perth, Australia) logged a hat trick on Senior Day. Freshman Lucy Hyams (Whitstable, Kent, England) had three assists, including setting up two of Buckley’s goals.
“This was a great Duke/Virginia game and a great ACC game,” said head coach Michele Madison. “We put a lot of pressure on them in the first half and were able to create attack from the defensive situations. They made adjustments in the second half and we weren’t able to apply the same amount of pressure. We were really successful today when we were releasing the ball and generating attack with numbers.”
Buckley set the tone early, scoring on the first shot of the game by either team when she smashed in the ball from the right side of the net at the 5:11 mark. Duke countered almost immediately, scoring a goal off a quick shot 28 seconds later. Freshman Riley Tata (Virginia Beach, Va.) tapped in a pass from Hyams across the circle to put UVa back in the lead with ten minutes left in the first half.
Buckley and Hyams connected for a goal with five minutes remaining in the first half to give Virginia a 3-1 lead at the break. Hyams set Buckley up again 51 seconds into the second half to extend the Virginia lead to 4-1.
Duke answered quickly, scoring a goal less than three minutes later to make it a 4-2 game. The Blue Devils added a score off a penalty corner nine minutes into the second half to cut the Cavalier lead to one, 4-3.
The Virginia defense took over the contest, with Duke managing just one more shot the rest of the game as the Cavaliers held on for the win.
Virginia took 18 shots in the game, 11 on goal, while Duke managed six shots, five on goal.
Buckley, one of eight Cavalier seniors honored in the post-game Senior Day ceremony, moved into third place on the Cavalier career points list with her six points in the game, giving her 179 in her career. Buckley, who has 46 points this season on 20 goals and six assists, leads the ACC in both points and goals.
Hyams and Tata are now tied for second on the team with 20 points. Tata’s goal was her tenth of the season. Hyams now has 10 assists with five goals.
The Cavaliers will wrap up the regular season on Friday, Oct. 25 when they play at No. 1 Maryland in a 6 p.m. game. Virginia then has a bye week before heading to Newton, Mass. for the ACC Tournament, being held Nov. 7-10 at Boston College.
