CHARLOTTESVILLE – Klöckner Stadium will host one of the biggest games of its 22-year history Sunday as the No. 1 Virginia women’s soccer team meets No. 3 Florida State. The game kicks off at 2 p.m., and features the nation’s two remaining unbeaten squads.
Tickets for the game are $7 for adult general admission and $5 for youth, senior and faculty/staff general admission. Group tickets (20 or more) are $4. Free parking is available in the University Hall lots. Fans will receive the third and final set of 2013 Virginia women’s soccer trading cards.
There will be a live video broadcast of the contest via a Cavaliers Live subscription on VirginiaSports.com.
The game is the first women’s soccer matchup of two top-three squads in Klöckner Stadium history. The matchup of the Cavaliers (17-0, 11-0 ACC) and Seminoles (14-0-3, 9-0-2 ACC) marks the latest in the year two unbeaten have played each other since Penn State played Portland in the 2005 College Cup semifinals. Oct. 27 will mark the latest date of a regular season matchup of two undefeated team in women’s soccer history, eclipsing a 1997 game between North Carolina and Santa Clara on Oct. 19.
Virginia is its sixth week as the nation’s consensus No. 1 team and can clinch its first ACC regular season title with a win or tie Sunday. The Cavaliers lead the nation in scoring at 3.29 goals per game and are the only team in the nation to have three double-digit goal scorers. Sophomore forward Makenzy Doniak (Chino Hills, Calif.) leads the team with 13 goals and sophomore Brittany Ratcliffe (Williamstown, N.J.), the reigning ACC Player of the Week, has scored 11 goals. Junior midfielder Morgan Brian (St. Simons Island, Ga.) has 10 goals and leads the ACC with 11 assists.
The Cavaliers are coming off a 4-0 victory over Miami on Thursday to open their homestand. The win gave Virginia its school-record 17th consecutive victory.
The Seminoles enter the game on a five-game win streak since a 1-1 draw at Clemson on Sept. 29. Florida State downed its fifth ranked opponent of the season Thursday, winning 2-1 at No. 7 Virginia Tech.
Virginia leads the all-time series 17-3-4, including an 8-0-1 mark at Klöckner Stadium. The teams split two meetings last season, with the Seminoles posting a 1-0 overtime win in the regular season matchup in Tallahassee and the Cavaliers winning 4-2 in the ACC semifinals in Cary, N.C. The last three regular season games in the series have gone to overtime.
The Cavaliers conclude the regular season Thursday as they host in-state rival Virginia Tech. Game time is 7 p.m. and the team will honor its senior class prior to the game.
