Cavalier Varsity Eight Earns Win at Princeton Chase

PRINCETON, N.J.—Virginia rowing’s Varsity Eight picked up a win at the Princeton Chase on Lake Carnegie in Princeton, N.J., on Sunday (Oct. 27). Four of the Cavaliers’ six crews earned top-five finishes.
Virginia’s top crew picked up the win in the Varsity Eight race in a time of 14:34.417, almost 11 seconds ahead of Yale (14:45.063). Princeton was third in 14:50.893, but Cavalier crews occupied fourth and fifth in 15:03.590 and 15:03.677, respectively. Virginia’s fourth entry in the race placed 22nd (15:42.983) out of the 52 boats that completed the race.
“The Varsity Eight earned a great win today amongst a big and talented field,” UVa head coach Kevin Sauer said. “I thought our team showed great depth also getting fourth, fifth and 22nd in the varsity race and a close second in the novice race. We’re looking forward to three weeks of training before hosting the Rivanna Romp.”
In the Novice Eight race, UVa was edged by Princeton, 15:51.963 to 15:53.229. Georgetown was third over 40 seconds behind in 16:37.045, while Penn and Boston University rounded out the top five.
The Cavaliers will conclude its fall season Nov. 17 at the annual Rivanna Romp on the Rivanna reservoir in Earlysville, Va. at 9 a.m. Admission is free.
