GREENSBORO, N.C. – Virginia sophomore defender Emily Sonnett (Marietta, Ga.) was named ACC Women’s Soccer Co-Player of the Week, conference officials announced Tuesday. Sonnett shares the award with North Carolina senior forward Kealia Ohai.

Sonnett helped the Cavaliers post a pair of shutout victories last week. In Thursday’s 4-0 win over Miami, she recorded a career-high two assists. On Sunday, she anchored a Virginia defense that allowed just one shot in a 1-0 overtime victory over No. 3 Florida State. That win clinched the Cavaliers’ first ACC regular season title.

On the season, Sonnett has started all 18 games, recording one goal and five assists.

The award is the first of Sonnett’s career as she becomes just the second Virginia defender to win the award, joining Nikki Krzysik in 2007. It is the third consecutive week that a Cavalier has been honored, with junior midfielder Morgan Brian (St. Simons Island, Ga.) and sophomore forward Brittany Ratcliffe (Williamstown, N.J.) honored on Oct. 15 and Oct. 22 respectively. It is the fourth award of the season for Virginia as Brian was also recognized on Aug. 27.

Virginia (18-0, 12-0 ACC) looks to complete a perfect regular season Thursday as it hosts rival Virginia Tech (14-2-2, 9-2-1 ACC) in the regular season finale. Game time at Klöckner Stadium is set for 7 p.m.
