FLUSHING, N.Y. – The singles and doubles play of sophomore Julia Elbaba (Oyster Bay, N.Y.) and freshman Rachel Pierson (Princeton, N.J.) highlighted Virginia’s action Thursday (Nov. 7) at the USTA/ITA National Indoor Intercollegiate Championships in Flushing, N.Y.

Elbaba and Pierson advanced to the quarterfinals in doubles by posting a pair of victories. The UVa tandem posted an 8-5 win over No. 3 Emina Bektas and Brooke Bolender of Michigan in the round of 32 and an 8-7(3) win over Oklahoma’s Mia Lancaster and Whitney Ritchie in the round of 16. Elbaba and Pierson play No. 26 Megan Kurey and Kendal Woodard of Georgia Tech in the quarterfinals.

In singles round of 32 action, No. 9 Elbaba rallied for a 6-7(2), 6-4, 6-2 win over No. 3 Lauren Herring of Georgia. Elbaba will play Texas’ Breaunna Addison Friday (Nov. 8) in the round of 16.

Pierson posted a 3-6, 7-5, 6-2 win over No. 48 Cristina Stancu of Texas A&M. Pierson takes on UCLA’s Jennifer Brady in the round of 16.

UCLA’s No. 80 Chanelle Van Nguyen defeated No. 74 Danielle Collins (St. Petersburg, Fla.) 6-3, 6-3. Collins will play Vanderbilt’s Georgina Sellyn in consolation action Friday.

The USTA/ITA National Indoor Intercollegiate Championships serve as the culmination of the fall college tennis season. Hosted by Columbia University, the prestigious event features a 32-player singles draw and a 20-team doubles draw.

Twenty-one schools are represented in the women’s singles draw, with Georgia, UCLA and Virginia represented by three players each. The women’s singles draw also features six of the top 10 players from the ITA Women’s Preseason Rankings, including No. 9 Elbaba. The doubles field features 15 different schools in the field of 20 teams.

This is the fourth consecutive year the USTA/ITA National Indoor Intercollegiate Championships will be held at the home of the US Open.
