Cavaliers Drop Four-Set Match at No. 15 North Carolina, 3-1

CHAPEL HILL, N.C.—The Virginia volleyball team dropped a four-set match at No. 15 North Carolina, 25-18, 22-25, 25-19 and 26-24, Saturday evening (Nov. 16) at Carmichael Arena in Chapel Hill, N.C. With the loss the Cavaliers, fell to 15-13 on the season (8-8 ACC), while the Tar Heels improved to 24-3 (13-3).
The Tar Heels hit .292 compared to UVa’s .216 and led in kills, 60-54. The Cavaliers held a 6-3 advantage in service aces, but had 12 service errors to North Carolina’s five.
Freshman Jasmine Burton (White Hills, Calif.) led the Cavaliers with 20 kills on .341 hitting. Burton has moved into sixth place on UVa’s all-time freshman list with 332 kills for the season.
Junior Tori Janowski (Sterling, Va.) added 14 kills, while junior Natalie Bausback (Carlsbad, Calif.) tallied seven blocks.
The first set was tied at 11 when the Tar Heels won five points in a row on the way to a 25-18 win. In the second, the Cavaliers limited their errors (three down from seven in the first set) and served up four aces en route to a 25-22 victory. In the third, North Carolina never trailed and hit .370 on the way to a 25-19 triumph.
The Cavaliers had a 19-14 lead in the fourth set, but UNC went on an 8-1 run to take a 22-20 lead. UVa earned three points in a row to gain a 23-22 advantage, but a Tar Heel block tied the set at 23. A Burton kill fought off North Carolina’s first match point, but another Tar Heel block gave UNC a 26-24 victory.
Hayley McCorkie hit .409 with 12 kills and Victoria McPherson hit .370 with 14 kills to lead the Tar Heels.
Up next, the Cavaliers travel to Notre Dame on Nov. 22, before hosting Virginia Tech on Nov. 24 at 3 p.m.
