CHARLOTTESVILLE – The top-seeded Virginia women’s soccer team continues play in the 2013 NCAA Tournament Friday as it hosts a second-round doubleheader at Klöckner Stadium. The Cavaliers play Georgetown at 7 p.m. in the second game of the day, following a 4 p.m. matchup between Penn State and Wake Forest.
VirginiaSports.com will have live stats (GameTracker) and a free webcast of both games of the doubleheader.
Tickets for Friday are $9 for reserved seats, $7 for adult general admission and $5 for youth/student/senior citizen general admission, and are good for both games of the doubleheader. Fans can order tickets for the tournament online at VirginiaSports.com and by phone through the Virginia Athletics Ticket Office at 800-542-UVA1 (8821) or 434-924-UVA1 (8821). Tickets are also available at the gate beginning one hour prior to the start of play.
On Friday, cash parking will be available for $5 in the University Hall, McCue Center and John Paul Jones Arena lots, and free parking will be available in the Emmet/Ivy Parking Garage.
The winners of Friday’s games will meet in the third round Sunday at Klöckner Stadium. That game will be 5 p.m., and follows the Virginia men’s soccer team’s NCAA second round game against either Delaware or St. John’s at 1 p.m.
This season marks the 16th time in the past 20 years that the Cavaliers have hosted NCAA Tournament play at Klöckner Stadium. Overall, Virginia has a 22-12-3 record in home NCAA Tournament games. Virginia is making its 20th consecutive NCAA Tournament appearance and 26th overall appearance. Only North Carolina and Notre Dame have longer active streaks of tournament appearances.
Friday’s doubleheader features three of the four highest scoring teams in the nation. Virginia leads the nation in scoring at 3.27 goals per game, while Georgetown ranks third at 2.90 goals per game and Penn State is fourth at 2.73 goals per game.
The Cavaliers (21-1) are the No. 1 overall seed in the tournament. They opened NCAA Tournament play last week with a 5-0 victory over Saint Francis (Pa.) in the first round. Sophomore Makenzy Doniak (Chino Hills, Calif.) scored a hat trick against the Red Flash and now leads the ACC in scoring with 41 points (18 goals, five assists). Junior midfielder Morgan Brian (St. Simons Island, Ga.) ranks second with 40 points (13 goals, 14 assists) as Virginia is the first school in the nation since 2009 to have two 40-point scorers.
Georgetown (16-2-2) is making its fourth NCAA Tournament appearance. The Hoyas opened the tournament with a 2-0 home victory over La Salle last week.
Friday’s game is the first official meeting between the schools. The teams have played numerous times in preseason exhibitions and spring season contests over the last decade, but have never met in regular season or postseason play.
In the first game of the doubleheader, Penn State (15-6-1) and Wake Forest (11-6-2) meet for the second time in the NCAA Tournament in the past three seasons. The Demon Deacons downed the Nittany Lions 4-2 in the 2011 third round in Winston-Salem en route to their first College Cup appearance. Last year, Penn State reached the NCAA Tournament final, falling to North Carolina.
