CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – The No. 11 Virginia wrestling team won two of its three matches Saturday at the Northeast Duals in Troy, N.Y. The Cavaliers defeated Clarion (21-13) and Rutgers (22-9) and lost to Lehigh (19-14).
“I am very proud of our team,” Virginia head coach Steve Garland said. “They are banged up and fought like crazy to make that dual so close (against Lehigh). We were in a dogfight this weekend and our battle scars are pretty evident. We have technical things to fix, and I am excited to get back to work Monday. I love this team.”
Gus Sako (R-Jr., Cleveland, Ohio) and Nick Sulzer (R-Jr., Cleveland, Ohio) each swept through their three matches Saturday. Sulzer scored bonus points in all three of his bouts and continued his early-season assault; he is now 9-0 on the year and has won by bonus points in each.
The Lehigh match came down to the final bout in a 16-14 contest, with UVa’s Ethan Hayes (R-So., New Lebanon, Ohio) and Lehigh’s Doug Vallaro going to overtime in the heavyweight match before Vallaro scored the winning takedown to secure the individual and team victory.
In the opener against Clarion, UVa fell into a 6-3 hole before rattling off five straight wins from 149 to 197 pounds, including consecutive major decisions from Sulzer, Stephen Doty (R-Sr., St. Louis, Mo.) and Jon Fausey (R-Sr., Dalmatia, Pa.) at 165, 174 and 184, respectively.
The Cavaliers were in control throughout against a solid Rutgers team, winning seven of 10 matches. Joseph Martinez (R-So., Platteville, Colo.) picked up a good win at 133 pounds with a 6-2 decision over 18th-ranked Vincent Dellefave.
Virginia’s tough fall slate continues next Friday and Saturday when the Cavaliers travel to Las Vegas to compete in the Cliff Keen/Las Vegas Invitational.
