CARY, N.C. – Three members of the Virginia women’s soccer team were named All-Americans Friday by the National Soccer Coaches Association of America. Junior midfielder Morgan Brian (St. Simons Island, Ga.) and sophomore forward Makenzy Doniak (Chino Hills, Calif.) were named to the first team, while junior midfielder Danielle Colaprico (Freehold, N.J.) was named to the third team.
Virginia’s three All-American selections are the most in program history as this year marks the third time in the past four seasons that the Cavaliers have had multiple players recognized. It is also the third time in history that Virginia has had a pair of first-team honorees (Amanda Cromwell and Andrea Rubio in 1991, Nikki Krzysik and Becky Sauerbrunn in 2007).
Brian, who was also a first-team All-American in 2011, becomes the 11th player in Virginia history to be a multiple-time honoree and the fourth to twice be a first-team selection.
Brian is the leading scorer in the ACC with 46 points on 16 goals and a league-high 14 assists. She has tied the Virginia single-season assist record and is one point shy of the single-season point record. Brian has scored in all four of the Cavaliers’ NCAA Tournament victories to lead the team to its first College Cup appearance in 22 years. Brian, who is also a Hermann Trophy semifinalist, was a first-team All-ACC selection for the third consecutive season. She has also made three appearances for the United States Women’s National Team this year, scoring her first international goal on Sept. 3 against Mexico.
Doniak and Colaprico earned All-American honors for the first time in their careers and became the 20th and 21st players in Virginia history to be named All-Americans. Doniak becomes the eighth Cavalier to be named a first-team All-American, joining Cromwell (1991), Rubio (1991, 1992), Sauerbrunn (2003, 2007), Krzysik (2007, 2008), Sinead Farrelly (2010), Caroline Miller (2012) and Brian.
Doniak ranks second in the ACC in scoring with 44 points on 19 goals and six assists. A Hermann Trophy semifinalist, she is one goal shy of the Virginia single-season goal record and three points shy of the single-season points record. The first-team All-ACC honoree leads the team with six game-winning goals, including two in the NCAA Tournament.
Colaprico ranks second on the team and in the ACC with 13 assists to go along with five goals. She was a first-team NSCAA All-Southeast Region selection in addition to being named second-team All-ACC. Three of her assists this season have come in the NCAA Tournament and she holds the Virginia record with seven career NCAA Tournament assists.
The Cavaliers will play UCLA on Friday in the semifinals of the 2013 NCAA Women’s College Cup. Game time is 7:30 p.m. at the WakeMed Soccer Park in Cary, N.C., and the game will be televised live on ESPNU.
