CHARLOTTESVILLE – Virginia junior midfielder Morgan Brian (St. Simons Island, Ga.) and head coach Steve Swanson earned top honors as the Virginia Sports Information Directors (VaSID) announced the 2013 All-State Women’s Soccer Team on Friday. Brian was named State Player of the Year and Swanson received State Coach of the Year honors.

Brian was one of five Cavaliers named to the All-State first team, joined by junior midfielder Danielle Colaprico (Freehold, N.J.), sophomore forward Makenzy Doniak (Chino Hills, Calif.), senior defender Molly Menchel (Alexandria, Va.) and sophomore defender Emily Sonnett (Marietta, Ga.). Sophomore forward Brittany Ratcliffe (Williamstown, N.J.) and first-year goalkeeper Morgan Stearns (San Antonio, Texas) were named to the second team.

Brian, who was named the TopDrawerSoccer.com National Player of the Year, is also a finalist for the MAC Hermann Trophy and the Honda Award. She was leading scorer in the ACC this season with 46 points on 16 goals and a league-high 14 assists. A first-team NSCAA All-American, she tied the Virginia single-season assist record. Brian scored in all four of the Cavaliers’ NCAA Tournament victories as she led the team to its first College Cup appearance in 22 years. Brian was a first-team All-ACC selection for the third consecutive season, in addition to being named to the ACC All-Tournament Team and the All-NCAA Tournament Team. She has also made three appearances for the United States Women’s National Team this year, scoring her first international goal against Mexico on Sept. 3.

Swanson was named VaSID State Coach of the Year for the seventh time in his career. The 2013 NSCAA National Coach of the Year and ACC Coach of the Year led Virginia to a 24-1-1 record, the ACC regular season title and NCAA Women’s College Cup. The Cavaliers set school records with 24 wins, 78 goals and 16 shutouts this season.
